The first steps taken to organize a bank in Apollo were at a meeting held in Whitlinger’s Hall on May 16, 1871. J. B. Chambers and S. M. Jackson were elected as president and secretary of the meeting, respectively. Dr. William McBryar, S. M. Jackson and S. P. Townsend were appointed to a committee to draft the bank’s bylaws.

Another meeting, held on May 27, 1871, saw the adoption of the constitution and bylaws. The name chosen for the bank was “Apollo Savings Bank”. J. B. Chambers, Samuel Jack, William McBryar, John Morrow, S. P. Townsend, James M. Kennedy, David Kepple, W. C. Bovard and Adam Maxwell were elected as directors. J. B. Chambers was elected president and S. M. Jackson, cashier. The bank opened for business on August 7, 1871 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. The building was constructed for $500 on a lot purchased from Mrs. Withington.

In 1876 Apollo Savings Bank experienced its first tragedy. Destroyed by fire, the bank was forced to conduct business from a room rented from W. C. Bovard. Construction began immediately on a building that still stands on First Street. It was completed and ready for occupancy November 1, 1876.

Apollo Savings Bank operated as a private bank until 1895 when a state charter was taken out. Capitalization then was $60,000. The turn of the century marked a time for change, and in 1901 the bank changed its name to Apollo Trust Company. The bank’s capital was increased at that time to $125,000.

In 1954 the assets of the First National Bank of Apollo were purchased and the liabilities assumed. That institution had served the community well and faithfully since 1901.

In March 1961, fire originating in the Blumenstein building swept through and destroyed the old First National Bank building. Operations for that branch were conducted for about a year in two house trailers that were converted to offices. In 1961 construction began on the new main office at the site of the fire. The building was completed in 1963 and occupied on September 23rd of that year.

In response to rapid growth in the area, Apollo Trust Company opened an office in North Apollo on March 1, 1962. As the surrounding communities grew Apollo Trust Company responded with two more branches in Spring Church and North Washington that opened for business in May 1975. Expansion continued in 1985 with the opening of a third drive-in facility at 308 North Second Street, Apollo.

Apollo Trust Company became one of the few remaining financial institutions in the Kiski Valley that is locally owned and operated. To assure self-determination, Apollo Bancorp, Inc., a holding company, was finalized in 1986.

The bank unveiled a new logo in 1987, which consists of the letter “A” composed of three separate bars … each representing the counties that touch the Kiski Valley and make up the communities served by Apollo Trust Company.

A branch office was constructed to better serve the North Apollo area. Opened on October 5, 1987, the modern facility was designed for customer convenience and full service banking. The North Apollo office stands in testimony to Apollo Trust Company’s commitment to remain a locally operated financial institution.

Because of the customer growth in the North Washington area, the drive-through operation was expanded and a full-service office was constructed in March 1990. This new branch provides additional services to Westmoreland County customers.

On November 21, 1996 a new full service branch opened in Allegheny Township, Leechburg, PA. For added customer convenience the branch implemented extended weekday hours, as well as Saturday morning banking hours. Expansion into this vibrant and growing community gives Apollo Trust Company an opportunity to develop strong new relationships with customers.

Apollo Trust Company is committed to providing the best, convenient service to its customers. The pride and dedication of hard-working individuals, who care deeply about the bank and the communities in which they serve, make it all happen.
